We take the fear out of going to the dentist!
While most people don’t exactly look forward to visiting the dentist, some patients become so unnerved by the thought of pain and the sounds of a dental drill that they put off treatment for years. Because we want to make sure you receive the care you need, we offer sedation dentistry to help reduce the anxiety of your visit.
Who is a candidate for sedation dentistry?
Sedation dentistry is appropriate for patients with all types of dental anxiety. If you have sensitive teeth or a fear of needles, sedation dentistry will relieve that pain and apprehension. If you are embarrassed about your teeth, Dr. Ben and Dr. Eric can perform your examinations and treatment while you drift and relax in the dental chair. If you have had a traumatic dental experience in the past, Dr. Ben and Dr. Eric can use sedation to prepare you for treatment.
Sedation dentistry is also helpful for patients with complex dental issues. If you are undergoing more than one procedure in a single visit, sedation dentistry will allow us to complete your treatment quickly and effectively while you relax. You will find that your treatment flies by when you are comfortable and calm.
What type of sedation do we offer?
There are several different sedation techniques available at our practice, including anxiety free sedation, I.V. sedation, and “conscious sedation” with nitrous oxide. Anxiety free sedation is quick and easy. Patients take a pill and breeze through their appointment with little memory of the visit. Nitrous oxide also allows patients to remain completely calm and anxiety-free, but still aware of their surroundings and able to respond to questions and direction. For patients requiring significant dental work, I.V. sedation is always an alternative.
Nitrous oxide is ideal for patients who have dental anxiety but may not wish to be heavily sedated. Nitrous oxide works quickly; patients will begin to feel the effects within minutes. The level of nitrous oxide administered can be adjusted throughout the course of treatment and the effects will last only as long as the dental procedure. As an added bonus, nitrous oxide takes only a few minutes to disappear from the system, and patients can leave our office almost immediately and drive themselves home after treatment.
